Portishead

Portishead’s history dates back to Roman times. It’s name derives from the ‘port at the head of the river’. The town was built on the mouth of a small tributary; indeed the High Street once met the water at the top of the river. Iron rings, evidence of where the old fishing boats used to moor, can still be seen today on the street’s stone walls.
Portishead is situated on a ridge with sweeping views of the Severn Estuary to one side and the Gordano Valley to the other. Just 2 to 3 miles off Junction 19 of the M5 Motorway, 8 miles from Bristol itself, with links to the Midlands, London and the South Coast.
The current population of Portishead is approximately 18,000. The area is currently benefiting from an enormous amount of investment in the new Port Marine development that provides the town with a wide variety of housing styles to compliment the existing residential areas.
Portishead’s Victorian High Street offers a range of outlets to cater for all needs to include Banks, Building Societies, estate agents, shops, cafes, pubs etc. together with a Post Office. Supermarkets Waitrose, Somerfield and a Co-op are also available within the town. There are also several family health centres, dentists and opticians available.
The Lake Grounds area, which includes an artificial lake, cricket pitch, bowling green, tennis courts and woodland walks dates back to the early 20th Century and is the town's main recreational area. One of the UK's last surviving outdoor swimming pools is situated next to the Lake Grounds and is open during the summer months. This very popular area of the town is alive during both the summer and winter months with sporting and recreational activity.
